Story — English
Though not named in the Quran directly, she is the first martyr of Islam — an elderly freed slave woman who was tortured by Abu Jahl for her faith. She refused to renounce Islam and was killed by Abu Jahl with a spear. Her husband Yasir and son Ammar were also tortured. The Prophet ﷺ would pass by them saying ‘Be patient, family of Yasir — your promised place is Paradise.’ The Quran’s general ayaat about those who are oppressed for their faith (16:106, 22:58-59) encompass her story.
